DW Maxx was not trained to ride when he arrived, but did know how to lead. He was a smart colt, and became my eagle… always watching. He also made a point of making sure that the world knew that he was around ; happily galloping around his pasture, or doing his famous I-don't-have-to-touch-the-ground trot. Calling loudly, to let all the mares know : "Here I am!" (and to all the other stallions : "You just come on over here, and I'll smuck you.")

Maxx also had a lot of get-up-and-go, and we have spent a considerable amount of hours putting this energy to work. He was always testing me, and he taught me a lot about horses, patience, life… and thus we became bonded friends, and wonderful buddies. What would I do without my Maxx The Meathead (just kidding), the show off, the horse who says "If you had only explained it right the first time!… Yeah! I can do it 'Mum', and we can do it again - only better the next time."
We learned how to and how not to do halter, liberty, western pleasure, road hack, country English pleasure, various flat classes, reining… we quickly discovered, however, that we both just loved Competitive Trail Riding. Soon he was eating up miles, and for me, I was riding a fireball throughout all of these events. Maxx carried me, and sometimes we even won!
Maxx had yet another surprise for me : his foals were unmistakably his - heads up, ears pricked, a zeal for life, wonderful attitudes towards working and learning, and of course the "Show me how, and I'll do it for you" demeanors. Maxx's offspring dance in liberty, and yet a moment later can carry a child, or a grandmother. He also lets the mare have a say in the colour of the foal, and often sires bay foals out of bay mares. I know I'm not colour blind - it's great seeing babies with the qualities of the sire as well as the dam.
As you stand and swish the flies, Maxx, I wonder if you will ever realize that because you can do it, I can do it too.
Thank you so very much my "little red horse", DW Maxx.
